Exhibiting Artist
Fan Ho
(1931-2016)
Known as “the Henri Cartier-Bresson of the East,” Fan Ho was extremely talented at creating compositions with backdrops of geometric structure, pattern and texture, and he captured countless decisive moments.
Rather than merely documenting buildings or monuments, he sought to capture Hong Kong’s soul—its people’s joy and hardship as well as the city’s rebirth.
In his teens and twenties he garnered nearly 300 domestic and international salon awards, producing his largest body of work.
Fan Ho was a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and the Royal Society of Arts, and an honorary member of photographic societies in Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium.
He received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2nd Global Chinese International Photography Awards (Guangzhou, 2015).
His works are held in numerous private and public collections, notably the followingM+ Museum (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Exhibition Concept
Fan Ho, one of the most celebrated Asian photographers of the mid‑twentieth century, continually evolved throughout his prolific career, steadily refining his singular artistic vision.
In his early years, Ho achieved acclaim for his mastery of pictorialism. Light and shadow were orchestrated with precision, and every compositional element was carefully arranged within a dramatic tableau. In these stylized images, people served the formal harmony of the scene—a masterful control of structure that earned him numerous international awards.
Over time, however, his priorities shifted toward a more intimate expression of the inner lives of those before his lens. Drawing closer to his subjects, he allowed them to emerge as the true emotional focus, marking the deepening of his humanistic approach. Eventually, recognizing that the refined aesthetics of pictorialism could not fully articulate the social realities of his time, he turned toward a more direct documentary language.
This exhibition traces Fan Ho’s journey—from his early pursuit of formal elegance to his profound engagement with the unvarnished realities of Hong Kong’s people. We invite you to experience the depth and richness of a vision that continues to resonate today.
