Exhibiting Artist

Fan Ho
(1931-2016)

Known as “the Henri Cartier-Bresson of the East,” Fan Ho was extremely talented at creating compositions with backdrops of geometric structure, pattern and texture, and he captured countless decisive moments.
Rather than merely documenting buildings or monuments, he sought to capture Hong Kong’s soul—its people’s joy and hardship as well as the city’s rebirth.
In his teens and twenties he garnered nearly 300 domestic and international salon awards, producing his largest body of work.
Fan Ho was a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and the Royal Society of Arts, and an honorary member of photographic societies in Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium.
He received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2nd Global Chinese International Photography Awards (Guangzhou, 2015).
His works are held in numerous private and public collections, notably the followingM+ Museum (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Exhibition Concept

A leading Asian photographer of the mid-20th century, Fan Ho poetically orchestrated natural light, shadow, composition and space. His works quietly yet powerfully depict fast-changing Hong Kong at the time, and the vibrant pulse of the people that lived there. In later years he challenged photographic boundaries with collages and radical cropping.
This exhibition presents 53 prints, the majority of which were printed by the artist himself, across all gallery rooms, allowing visitors to trace the evolution of his approach to photography.

The exhibition was created with the support of Blue Lotus Gallery Hong Kong and the Fan Ho estate.

We invite you to relive nostalgic memories and experience an inspiring journey through Fan Ho’s Hong Kong.
